What is magnesium stearate?
Magnesium stearate serves as a common flow agent in supplement manufacturing, facilitating the smooth movement of powders through machines and aiding in the absorption of ingredients in the body.
Considered GRAS (generally recognized as safe), magnesium stearate has been evaluated by the National Center for Biotechnology, which deems it safe at levels up to 2,500mg per kg of body weight. For example, a person weighing about 150 pounds could safely consume up to 170,000mg of magnesium stearate daily.
In a typical supplement capsule, however, the amount of magnesium stearate ranges from just 4-8mg. When ingested, magnesium stearate breaks down into magnesium and stearic acid.
Stearic acid is a natural fatty acid commonly found in the diet, where it is metabolized for energy or used in cellular membranes. The average daily intake of stearic acid is approximately 5700mg for females and 8200mg for males. In contrast, the amount of magnesium stearate obtained from supplements is significantly lower—about 800 times less than what is typically consumed through diet. Thus, the small amounts of magnesium stearate used in supplements are well within safe dietary limits.
