Melatonin Bombshell: Long-Term Use Linked to 90% Higher Heart Failure Risk in New Study.

Sleep Aid or Heart Hazard? 5-Year Data Ties Melatonin to Doubled Mortality and Triple Hospitalization Odds.

A groundbreaking preliminary study presented at the American Heart Association’s Scientific Sessions 2025 has ignited widespread concern over the long-term use of melatonin supplements, revealing a potential link to heightened risks of heart failure among adults with chronic insomnia. Researchers analyzed five years of health records from over 130,000 patients, finding that those prescribed melatonin for at least one year faced a 90% increased likelihood of developing heart failure (4.6% incidence versus 2.7% in non-users), were 3.5 times more prone to hospitalization for the condition, and twice as likely to die from any cause. While the study, led by Dr. Ekenedilichukwu Nnadi of SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University, stops short of proving causation—suggesting instead that persistent insomnia and unmanaged underlying issues like elevated blood pressure or inflammation may be the true culprits—experts urge caution, emphasizing that melatonin, often viewed as a benign sleep aid, lacks robust data on cardiovascular safety for extended use. As headlines from outlets like The New York Times and CNN amplify the alarm. The great health news is that DYMA does not use any melatonin in our vitamin gummies! 🙂
